The Comic Creation
Event with DTM @ Binders
Well, this will be a slightly
different On Location blog for me since I will be writing about something I wasn't
really around for, first hand. DTMFlores, Atlanta Art Entrepreneur and founder of Art Is King recently held a
weekend camp for aspiring young artists at Binders on Piedmont in Atlanta. One such budding art hound in attendance was
the son of DAP Tales and myself, the very talented Mister Adrian.
The event ran three days through the
weekend and featured interaction from local artists Keef Cross, BalogunOjetade, Joseph Wheelre III, Del Hewitt and others. The challenge: young artists band together into teams and
try their hand at creating a full 24 page comic in one weekend. Hey, that's no small order, even for a bunch'a
pros, but these kids, if Mister Adrian is to be believed, had their fair shares
of both work and fun, tossed in one bowl.
Provided with pencils, paper, comic
book paper (yes, it is different and quite special and specific to the design
and publishing needs for that industry), markers and snacks and propelled by
inspiration and guidance from real, published local professionals, the youngsters
got their hands dirty (graphite, ink, eraser dust) and creative juices flowing
(writing, design and layout, inking, coloring) for three whole days in the lab
downstairs in Binders.
Mister Adrian is a Future Artist of
Atlanta (be on the look out for him) and as an artist myself, I know how it
feels when a group of creatives get together and ideas start bounding about and
synergy suddenly happens. I love him
having been able to be a part of that atmosphere; I know how essential it is to
the development and success of an artist.
I think he knows, too, now. I
could see it in his face. That glow of
excitement. He told me his favorite
parts of the weekend were the close contact with the pros and their ideas,
hearing how they dream and work, and the teamwork he shared with his fellow
artists.
Mister Adrian and I both were part of
one of DTM's ArtLife conversations at the Central Library in Downtown Atlanta
and you can totally feel his excitement at sharing with and inspiring these up
and coming art pros. He has an authentic
passion for engaging these ambitious and talented youth. At the ONCE A YEAR WE DRAW A COMIC BOOK
TOGETHER event, his excitement and enthusiasm were catching and my aspiring
young artist had a great time, and got some great experiences, artistically and
personally. Feeling that kind of
teamwork and getting that small glimpse into the life and work of the pros in
the industry and all for just 35 bucks on my end, seems an extremely good deal
to me.
Happy drawing you Princes and Princesses
of Pencil and Paper; your journey is just beginning!
