Heritage
Arts and Soul Festival, 2014
Saturday,
July 26 was a beautiful day: a blue sky
with a few lingering, lazy clouds luminous from a bright afternoon sun. It created the perfect excuse for a little
family adventure, so we trucked on down to the Avondale Marta station and
hopped on a train into town. It was The
Bean’s very first time on a train and she was literally glowing from the excitement. The Mister, in typical teen fashion, seemed
nonplussed, though he was eventually coerced into releasing a brief smile or
two. Our destination was the Heritage
Arts and Soul Festival at Underground Atlanta.
We
got off the train at Five Points station and climbed up into the daylight,
crossing the street to Underground, where the Heritage Arts and Soul Festival
was happening. After some questionable
curb-vendor nachos we again descended into the cool cavernous shade that was
Underground proper. It took a while to
locate the festival itself, which seemed a little off-path beyond the phone
accessories and two dollar earring kiosks but we finally found the corners
wherein was tucked the Heritage Arts and Soul Festival and FaceBook friend
Shelton Tremble. A small alcove shop
space allowed Shelton to surround himself with some of his beautifully rendered
paintings, filling it with vibrant color.
In the center of the floor were tables on which were featured “Regents”,
an original board game created by Shelton, a vivid, nationalistic step up from
chess. All in all, a very nice
showing. Shelton’s work can be found
online. The rest of the festival was
just out of reach, since Dap and I had a date to make at DooGallery and the
kids were close to heat stroke, but Shelton got some nice photos of the
surrounding festivities, seen below.
Enjoy!!
Here are some pics from two of our FB friends whom we weren't able to visit: D. Hodges and Sylvia Gbaby Cohen
